The whale shark (Rhincodon typus) is a slow-moving, filter-feeding shark and the largest living fish species. They can grow up to 40 feet (12 meters) in length and weigh up to 47,000 pounds (21,500 kg). Despite their massive size, whale sharks are gentle creatures and pose no threat to humans.
Whale sharks have a distinctive appearance, with a flattened head, a wide mouth that can stretch up to 4 feet (1.2 meters) wide, and five large gill slits. They have a pattern of white spots and stripes on a dark gray or blue-black background, which is unique to each individual and can be used to identify them.
Whale sharks are found in warm waters around the world, including the Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic Oceans. They feed on plankton and small fish, and can often be seen swimming near the surface with their mouths open, filtering large amounts of water.
